I looked at contours I'm already using on my Garmin (also generated from SRTM by DEM2TOPO), few observations: they are in meters, every 400th m is drawn in black color, others are in brown.

I think that the heights have to be given in feet inside the file, what units are the 'ele' tags in?.The case is tricky, because we have to look at two tags to work out what line should be produced.So we need to decide which heights should have the major contour (eg every 1000ft perhaps) and the same for the medium and minor ones. On the Garmin devices there are three kinds of land contour and three for the sea, both major, medium and minor contours.

There is some very quick code to process contour lines as produced by Srtm2Osm in mkgmap from version 307.

You can load custom icons for points, but they are extra and don't replace the built in ones. As far as I know the lines and roads are built in and you can't change them. A general question about Garmin maps: is using the Garmin map features the only way to specify how a certain map object should look like? I'm asking because, for example, on my Vista Cx the footways and tracks are shown in the same manner.

How exactly do you specify map-features file and set the levels in the command line?
